For many of us losing weight can seem close to impossible. You may have enjoyed short-term success with diets such as Atkins, the Zone diet, low-calorie diets, high fibre diets. The trick to successful weight loss is knowing what foods agree with you and are suited to your individual make-up. The body needs a mix of macronutrients so diets that take out entire food groups just can't work. Eventually your cravings will get the best of you! We were designed to eat in a certain way and if we stray from that cravings and weight gain are inevitable. Other reasons for weight gain include food allergies and intolerances or a low thyroid.

We do not use calorie-controlled diets as although calorie restriction may work in the short-term, it seldom does in the longer term. For some of our patients running some simple tests and making some small changes to the foods they eat have meant that they have effortlessly lost inches off their waist. For example many of our patients have a low thyroid, this is the cause of their weight gain. Unfortunately thyroid tests available on the NHS have failed to pick this up. We test hypothyroidism using a highly sensitive urine test.

Binge eating and Emotional eating

For some people eating is a coping mechanism. Just as an alcoholic uses alcohol to relieve anxiety, an emotional eater will use food. This means that we will eat in times of stress, boredom, loneliness, anger, even happiness! Do you ever find yourself bingeing on sugar or bread? Some patients describe feeling in a trance when this happens. Food makes them feel 'high' - in a sense they are self-medicating. This is why it is so difficult for them to lose weight. There are some foods that will exacerbate this addiction. Sometimes food intolerances can cause uncontrollable cravings. This is an area we are passionate about.
